Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2026-09-01
Who we are
This website is operated by Evan Clarke Professional Corporation, an Alberta professional corporation, which practises under the trade names Innovis Law and Kahane Law Office at its Edmonton office. Kahane Law Office is a trade name also used by Jeffery V. Kahane Professional Corporation, which is a separate corporation and a separate law practice. Enquiries made through this website are received and held by Evan Clarke Professional Corporation. We do not share them with, and they are not accessible to, Jeffery V. Kahane Professional Corporation.
In this policy, "we", "us" and "our" mean Evan Clarke Professional Corporation. We handle personal information under Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), and under the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) where that Act applies.
What this policy covers
This policy covers this website, innovislaw.com, only. It does not cover our client intake platform at app.innovislaw.com or other sites we link to.
It does not cover our work for clients. Once you retain us, your information is governed by your retainer agreement, the duty of confidentiality owed by our lawyers, and the rules of the Law Society of Alberta.
Sending a form or an email through this website does not create a lawyer and client relationship, and this website is not a secure channel. You do not need to describe the details of your situation to arrange a consultation: a brief enquiry is enough.
What we collect, and why
What you enter on a form. Your first name, last name and email address (required), your phone number if you provide it, the practice area you select, anything you write in the message box, and the page you were on when you submitted. We use this to respond to your enquiry, to run the conflicts check we are professionally required to complete before we can act for anyone, and, if you asked for a guide or checklist, to send it to you.
Call information. The number shown on this site is not always the same number. We use CallRail, a call tracking service, with a pool of five numbers in the 587 area code, and the number displayed changes for the length of your visit. All of them ring at our office line, 780-571-8463, and you reach the same people either way. For each call, we and CallRail receive the caller's number, the date, time and length of the call, whether it is a first call, and the advertising source associated with the browsing session in which that number was displayed. This is how a caller's phone number becomes connected to browsing activity on this site. We use it to receive and return calls, and to measure which advertising produces calls. Calls to these numbers are not recorded.
If you would rather not have a call connected to a browsing session, call our office line, 780-571-8463, directly.
Website use. Your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view, how far you scroll, and which buttons, phone links and email links you click. We use this to measure which pages and which advertising produce enquiries, and to keep the site working and free of spam and abuse. Basic server logs are kept regardless, to keep the site secure.
Information about other people. If your message names someone else, such as a spouse, a child, or another party, we use that information only to respond to you and to complete our conflicts check. We do not contact them, and we do not use it for marketing.
Our forms carry two anti-spam checks, a hidden field and a submission timer. Neither collects information about you.
Consent, and how to decline
Filling in a form, or calling a number shown on this site, is your consent to our using that information for the purposes described above.
For website analytics and call tracking, we rely on notice and your opportunity to decline, which PIPA permits where the information is not sensitive and the purposes are set out clearly. This is that notice. You can decline by:
- blocking or clearing cookies in your browser settings;
- using a browser add-on that opts you out of Google Analytics; or
- contacting our Privacy Officer, below, and asking us to stop.
We do not build profiles for any purpose other than measuring which pages and advertising produce enquiries.
PIPA also permits limited collection and use without consent, such as server logs kept to secure the site. You may withdraw consent at any time by contacting our Privacy Officer. Reasonable notice applies, some information must be kept to meet our legal and professional obligations, and withdrawing consent may mean we cannot provide what you asked for.
Email follow-up
If you asked for a guide or checklist, we email it to you, and we may send a short series of related emails over the following weeks. Every one of those emails identifies us and tells you how to unsubscribe: reply to any of them with "unsubscribe", and we will stop promptly. Unsubscribing does not affect our reply to your enquiry. We do not send a newsletter and we do not add you to any ongoing marketing list.
Who we share it with
We do not trade or rent personal information, and we do not disclose it to anyone for their own marketing purposes. We share it with the service providers that operate parts of this site and our follow-up, and we contract with each of them to use it only to provide those services to us:
- ClickUp: to manage enquiries and send follow-up email. Receives your form entries and the page you submitted them from.
- CallRail: to operate the tracking numbers. Receives the call information above.
- Google (Tag Manager, Analytics 4, Google Ads): to measure site use and advertising results. We send Google the fact that a call or form submission occurred and the advertising it came from. We do not send Google your name, email address or phone number.
- Microsoft 365: our email system. If you email us, or reply to us, that correspondence is received and stored there.
- Cloudflare: to host, deliver and protect this site. Processes your IP address and request details.
- Acuity Scheduling: to book consultations. A booking link may carry advertising parameters and an analytics identifier so we can connect a booking to the advertising that led to it. What you enter on the booking page is collected by Acuity.
We may also disclose personal information where the law requires or permits it.
Processing outside Canada
Each provider named above is based in the United States, and personal information collected through this site is collected, used, stored or otherwise processed there. Cloudflare also routes and processes website requests through servers in other countries on its global network. While personal information is outside Canada it is subject to the laws of that country, and may be accessible to the courts, law enforcement and government authorities there under those laws.
You may obtain written information about our policies and practices with respect to service providers outside Canada, and ask any question about the collection, use, disclosure or storage of personal information by those providers, by contacting:
Privacy Officer, Evan Clarke Professional Corporation: privacy@innovislaw.com / 780-571-8463
Access, correction and complaints
Under PIPA you may ask for access to the personal information we hold about you, and for information about how it has been used and who it has been disclosed to. You may also ask us to correct information you believe is wrong. We respond within 45 days, and will tell you if PIPA permits or requires us to extend that period or to refuse. Send your request to our Privacy Officer at the contact below. PIPA allows us to charge a reasonable fee for access requests; if one applies, we will give you a written estimate first.
If you have a concern about how we handle your personal information, please raise it with us first so we have the chance to address it. You may also complain to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta, at oipc.ab.ca.
Security and retention
We use security arrangements reasonable for the sensitivity of the information. Enquiries are held in a restricted area of our practice management system, accessible only to the staff and lawyers who need to see them. No website, email system or online service can be completely secure. If a breach occurs that a reasonable person would consider poses a real risk of significant harm, we report it to the Information and Privacy Commissioner as PIPA requires.
We keep personal information as follows, unless our legal, regulatory or professional obligations require longer:
- Enquiries that do not become matters: 12 months, then deleted.
- Correspondence you send us that does not become a matter: 12 months, then deleted.
- Call records held by CallRail: kept while we use CallRail.
- Website analytics: 14 months.
- Unsubscribe records: kept, so that we do not email you again.
We keep counts and statistics about enquiries, such as how many, from which pages and which advertising, for as long as we need them to measure our marketing. Those figures do not identify anyone, and we keep them after the underlying enquiry is deleted. Enquiries that do not become matters are not archived; they are deleted, though copies may persist briefly in routine system backups.
Where we hold personal information that we used to make a decision affecting you, we keep it for at least one year, as PIPA requires.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site, our service providers or the law change. The current version is always posted on this page, with its effective date at the top.
